Dissertation/Thesis Proposal Examination



Dissertation/Thesis Proposal Examination is designed to evaluate a student’s ability to plan, conduct and communicate independent research in both oral and written form. The quality of the proposal document is an important part of the evaluation. Each year, the curriculum committee holds a dissertation/thesis proposal preparation guidance session. Docteral students who have completed the Qualifying Examination are encouraged to attend.

  • Time Frame

    The Dissertation/Thesis Proposal Examination is typically taken between 1st semester of 2nd year following the successful completion of the Qualifying Examination and more than ninety days prior to the final Dissertation/Thesis Defense. The student must submit a written dissertation/thesis proposal to the Committee a minimum of two weeks prior to the oral examination date.

    In some circumstances, student advisors may recommend a different timeline for this examination, and students should discuss this possibility with their individual advisor. It is the responsibility of the advisor to communicate any modifications of the examination schedule to the Chaiman of Graduate Programs.


    Dissertation/Thesis Proposal Examination Committee

    The Dissertation/Thesis Proposal Examination Committee consists of at least five members including:

  • Three dissertation advisory committee, one of whom must be major advisor and the chair who is appointed by the university to work as a graduate instructor

  • At least two faculty member who is appointed by the university to work as a graduate instructor from either the department or another faculty at Chiang Mai University, another university, or a governmental or industrial research group as appropriate in the same or nearby fied of the dissertation and must not be a dissertation co-advisor


  • The composition of the committee should be mutually agreed upon by the student and his/her advisor. It is the responsibility of the Chair of the dissertation advisory committee to :

  • Organize the committee

  • Make necessary requests to faculty from the established requirements

  • Make recommendations on the examination results to faculty


  • Dissertation/Thesis Proposal Preparation

    The Dissertation/Thesis Proposal must be completed and presented by the student to the Committee a minimum of two weeks prior to the oral examination date. This sheet will be signed by the Committee at the completion of the exam and returned to the faculty.

    The thesis proposal document must include the following elements :

  • Name and Surname of student, advisor, and co-advisors
  • Title
  • Principles, Theory, Rationale, and/or Hypotheses
  • Literature review
  • Purposes of the study
  • Education/Application advantages
  • Research designs, scope and methods
  • Location
  • Duration
  • References
  • Appendices (optional)
